Leicestershire County Council says works to the front of Coalville Library have not yet been completed - following criticism that it is now an 'ugly' area after greenery has been removed.

Coalville councillor Michael Wyatt posted on social media that bushes and spring bulbs have been removed and replaced with 'peddled mess.'

He added: "What they have done is removed all the greenery and replace it with an ugly stoned unusable area.

"It's awful and whoever agreed to this wants sacking. I know there is a running cost to maintain a green area but to just rip everything out is disgusting."

He then said that the Conservative-controlled county council does not 'give a damn' about the environment.

But the county council issued a statement to Coalville Nub News in response.

It said that the area is still being worked on following the relocation of the Mother and Child Statue to the Belvoir Shopping Centre.

The statement reads: "The work to the front of Coalville library is not complete, and is still very much a work in progress.

"Following the decision by North West Leicestershire District Council to relocate the Mother and Child statute from the front of the library, we have worked with NWLDC on how to enhance the area.

"The first stage has been to clear the overgrown shrubbery and rubbish that had accumulated, and, over the coming weeks a number of planters, will be installed, and then filled with a variety of plants and flowers chosen to attract wildlife.

"The shrubbery was difficult to maintain and has been removed so that the area could be cleaned up and made safe.

"We have worked closely with local young people on what they would like to see in this area and how we can best make use of the space.

"A new heritage information board, which is part of NWLDC's heritage trail, has also been installed this week.

]"Once the work has been completed, it will provide a much better environment with a new and attractive wildlife habitat, and there are plans for community involvement to help maintain this space going forward."
