A plan to turn a Coalville hair salon into a burger joint has sparked fresh concerns over there being too many takeaways in the town centre.

Sweet T's Hair, in Ashby Road, announced it would be closing in the new year in a recent post on Facebook.

A bid to convert the salon – which currently remains open – has now been filed with North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC).

The proposed new use would see a burger takeaway move in – prompting renewed concerns by local ward councillor John Geary about the number of fast food outlets in the area.

He told planning officers he "strongly objected" to the proposition for "yet another" such outlet in the centre of Coalville.

He added: "I believe the council needs to take control of the number of such fast-food outlets within the town centre if for no other reason than the health and well being of the population in general."

Cllr Geary previously opposed a 2023 bid to set up the town centre's ninth pizza takeaway, saying there were already "far too many fast food outlets" there.

However, council planning officers approved the application for Pizza GoGo in the former William Hill bookmakers in Belvoir Road.

Limited details are available online for the new takeaway, called Zino Burger.

However, documents suggest it would be open seven days a week, with a possible closing time of 10pm. Two members of staff would be employed for the venue.

A public consultation on the proposal is set to run until Tuesday, January 14. NWLDC has set a target decision date of Monday, January 27.
