North West Leicestershire District Council plans to sell land in Greenhill - providing 100 new houses and securing funds for the new Coalville Leisure Centre.

A planning application submitted on Friday seeks permission to build approximately 100 high quality homes – 20 per cent of which would be affordable homes – on the parcel of land off Waterworks Road in Greenhill.

If planning permission is granted, the Council says it intends to sell the land to a developer - with the funds raised diverted straight into the Coalville Leisure Centre project which already has planning permission with construction due to start imminently.

The illustrative plan shows how the site could be regenerated and confirms that the development would not impact the football pitches, recreation area and BMX track that sit adjacent to the site.

The council plans to consult with local residents to see how these community facilities might be improved and enhanced to complement the new development, should it get permission.

Councilor Roger Bayliss, Portfolio Holder for Housing at NWLDC, said: "As we look to meet the housing demand in North West Leicestershire, this piece of land offers us the opportunity to create a high quality development in an area that really needs more homes.

"If planning permission is granted we will work with a developer to ensure a really high standard of homes on this site that can be held up as a leading example of good design in the district.

"The fact that the money raised will go straight into the Coalville Leisure Centre project also clearly demonstrates the community-wide benefit of a project like this."

Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, NWLDC has remained determined to push forward with the projects it can, which includes this planning application.

More than 1,000 households in the vicinity of the planned development have received a letter explaining the plans in the last fortnight and signposting to where they can comment on the application.

The application can be viewed in full and commented on through the planning portal at North West Leicestershire Planning
