Work will not start on removing traffic calming measures on Ashby Road in Coalville until after Coronavirus restrictions have been eased.

Leicestershire County Council will work with North West Leicestershire District Council on the scheme with ties in with the Coalville Regeneration Project.

But the introduction of new Government guidelines designed to contain the spread of the virus have delayed the work.

The scheme took another step forwards last week when North West Leicestershire District Council agreed to jointly fund the plans which will see the prioritising of sections of the flow of traffic into the town taken away Removal of traffic calming is approved by Council

It is something the District Council is backing as it wants to encourage people to drive into Coalville where plans are already in place to revitalise the Belvoir Shopping Centre New owners reveal plans for Belvoir Shopping Centre

But the County Council has confirmed that the Ashby Road plans are inevitably on hold due to the current lockdown.

A Council spokesperson said: "We are currently considering when we can carry out the highway improvements on Ashby Road in Coalville, due to the current implications of COVID-19."

The scheme includes plans to:

  • Remove of all three of the priority narrowings
  • Remove of 13 of the sheltered parking/traffic calming build-outs
  • Create of 16 on-street parking spaces, whilst removing three
  • Extend the existing advisory school 20mph zone
  • Create of two new uncontrolled crossing points
  • Improve four of the existing uncontrolled crossing points
  • Remove of unnecessary street furniture e.g. guard railing
  • Replace of existing illuminated bollards with reflective bollards
  • Address existing road surface maintenance issues making vehicular accesses at the main entrance to the Snibston Country Park and ASDA/BP Petrol Station safer for all users.
