Conservative election candidate Craig Smith invited former Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick to Coalville
North West Leicestershire Conservative election candidate Craig Smith welcomed former Cabinet Minister Robert Jenrick to Coalville's Century Theatre this week.
Mr Jenrick met members and supporters and discussed his recently released 30-point report on how legal migration can be reduced.
The report, which he co-authored for the Centre for Policy Studies proposed a number of policies including breaking up the Home Office to create a department more focused on border control, capping health and care visas at 30,000, scrapping the graduate route for international students, and indexing salary thresholds for visa routes in line with inflation.
Leicestershire County Councillor Smith said: "I was delighted that Robert was able to visit the constituency and outline the key reforms he and Leicestershire MP Neil O'Brien have put forward on the issue of immigration.
"I am getting a clear message on the doorstep that voters are looking for action on the rate of immigration. It's clear from the CPS report that there are sensible and pragmatic proposals which could have a real impact on the immigration rate, which at present is unsustainable."
He added: "It's clear that Labour has no plan for dealing with immigration as their opposition to the Rwanda scheme has demonstrated - only a Conservative Government will be committed to curbing both legal and illegal immigration with a sustainable immigration policy."
