The council's Community Scrutiny Committee will meet on Thursday discuss a potential new project put forward by Cllr Michael Wyatt.

He is hoping to get the backing of the committee for a community lottery to be introduced across North West Leicestershhire.

The scheme would then proceed to the council's Cabinet for consideration.

Cllr Wyatt said: "I have seen many organisations struggle over the years, and one of the major obstacles to any successful community group or charity is finance.

"My aim is to have a community lottery in place for North West Leicestershire so local community groups, charities and local organisations can benefit from a localised lottery - which means all the proceeds raised can stay within the district and not be used elsewhere.

"The work many community groups do within the district is crucial, so having this extra funding scheme available could be a major lifesaver, especially in this difficult financial time.

"It could also potentially help to support new initiatives which just needs a helping hand from some additional funding.

"The report which is going to scrutiny will give members greater details into why, and how, and they will be able to ask questions about the mechanics of having such a scheme in the district."

The tickets would be £1 each. There would be several prizes, with one large money prize with 60p from every ticket sale going towards a local good cause which is chosen by the player.

If it is agreed, the new lottery could be ready to be launched at the 125-year Coalville Park celebrations in June.
