Community groups in Coalville and North West Leicestershire are being encouraged to apply for funding to help local areas bloom in time for next spring.

North West Leicestershire District Council's (NWLDC) Green Shoot Grant scheme has re-opened, and groups can apply for funding to plant a variety of flowering bulbs across the district.

The scheme is match-funded and community groups and parish councils will be able to choose from a combination of narcissi, daffodils, crocus, tulips and snowdrops to create bright and colourful displays.

A mixed bulb option will also be available.

The District Council will cover half of the cost of the bulbs, with parish councils and community groups paying the remaining 50 per cent. A minimum order of 2,000 bulbs is required.

Commenting on the scheme having used it last year, Liz Summers from Ellistown Allotments, said: "We can't thank North West Leicestershire District Council enough for the funding for the beautiful spring bulbs.

"It made a huge impact to our wildlife project and brought such joy at our Annual Plant Open morning in early May."

Councillor Michael Wyatt, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "The Green Shoots Grant Scheme is a great opportunity for community groups and parish and town councils to create vibrant displays to increase biodiversity and wildlife in local areas.

Applications need to be made before Friday 1 September and can be submitted online HERE.

Other schemes are also available including the Zero Carbon Scheme for environmentally focused community projects across the district.
