North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has received a Green Flag Award for its Broomleys Cemetery.

The award - one of over 2200 in the UK - is the international quality benchmark for parks and cemeteries.

Green spaces have played a vital role for people through lockdowns in the last two years, offering spaces to reflect and find peace, and the Green Flag Award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team.

Feedback from the assessment report included:

• "Very friendly and helpful staff"

• "Clean, tidy, and spotless"

• "The Sexton on site is a credit to the service and goes the extra mile"

• "This site deserves a Green Flag in recognition of the fantastic and dedicated staff."

Coalville Park has also maintained Green Flag status since 2019 when the park first received the award.

Commenting on the news that the cemetery has met the Green Flag Award standard, Keep Britain Tidy's Accreditation Manager Paul Todd said: "I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Broomleys Cemetery worthy of a Green Flag Award.

"The site is a vital green space for the community in Coalville.

"This award is testament to all the hard work of staff and volunteers, who do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award."

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "We are incredibly proud of the team who work hard all year round to make sure our green spaces are attractive and welcoming for the community.

"The Green Flag award is a great achievement and reflects just how dedicated our parks staff and volunteers are to maintaining high standards across the district."

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
