A free tree scheme, that has given away almost 150,000 trees, is set to return to Coalville and North West Leicestershire.

Back for a 13th consecutive year, North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) is working with the National Forest Company to relaunch its Free Tree Scheme and Hedge Fund.

Running from now until Friday, October 28, residents and community groups can apply for up to two free saplings from four different native species, including:

• Field Maple

• Crab Apple

• Hazel

• Whitebeam

Applicants can also put in for 30 metres of free hedging through the council's Hedge Fund which runs alongside the Free Tree Scheme.

Species include Hawthorn and Hazel mix with a Crab Apple at 10 metre intervals.

One resident that has used the scheme since it began in 2008is Ann Ramsell, 58, from Ashby.

She said: "Our garden has never been so green and full of wildlife, and a lot of that is down to the free trees and hedging that we've received from the council.

"Each year, I look forward to the scheme opening so that can we apply for something different, in the hope that it will bring new life to attract birds, squirrels and insects."

Anyone who applies for free trees must be available to collect them on Sunday, November 20.

The trees are given away at approximately 60cm – 90cm (two to three feet high) and instructions on how to plant and look after the trees are provided on collection.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "We're pleased to bring the free tree scheme and hedge fund back for another year with support from the National Forest Company.

"By planting more trees, we're helping to tackle climate change as well as providing more food and habitats for local wildlife and ultimately, creating a better future for ourselves and our children.

"This year, our target is to give away 30,000 trees, in addition to the 147,063 already given away since the scheme began in 2008. We're asking you to help us to reach our biggest target yet and apply before Friday 28 October."

Louise Driver, Director of Operations at the National Forest Company, said: "We are delighted to be working again with North West Leicestershire District Council to offer free trees to their residents who live within the National Forest.

"The National Forest is one of the few places in England where biodiversity is increasing and we're eager to encourage everyone in the Forest to be part of this amazing story.

"Native trees are a wonderful way to encourage wildlife into your garden, providing shade and shelter for birds and butterflies as well as for you and your family to enjoy on a hot day."
