School children and local volunteers have helped to plant new life at a sensory garden at Coalville Park.

Pupils from Belvoirdale Primary School, Warren Hills and Marlborough Day Nursery and volunteers got their hands dirty and helped with sensory-friendly plants including herbs, flowers and shrubs.

The garden, which was previously maintained by the community, was brought back into North West Leicestershire District Council's (NWLDC) control to provide residents and park users with a place to reflect in a sensory safe space.

Pupils and volunteers will be invited back later in the year to plant spring and summer bulbs. The sensory garden is open to visitors and is located towards the rear of Coalville Park.

The planting session was also supported by the Rural Community Council, providing free refreshments to keep the volunteers well-hydrated.

Councillor Michael Wyatt, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: "It's great to see young people getting involved in something that's going to leave a lasting impact for residents in Coalville.

"Projects like this are even better with the community involved and I'd like to say a big thank you to the pupils and volunteers for coming along. We will look forward to welcoming them back again later in the year to help us planting the bulbs in time for spring and summer next year.

Mark Burrows, Teacher at Warren Hills Community Primary School and Nursery, said: "It was a lovely morning, planting in the park. The children really loved it, and some even went back to show their parents what they had done."
