Leicestershire's best and worst schools for progression have been named in a new study. A school in Oadby topped the list whilst one based in Coalville was seen to have the lowest progress.
The school attainment report, created by Non-Stop Kids and Online Marketing Surgery, ranked secondary schools in Leicester and Leicestershire based on their average Progress 8 score, using the information provided on the government website.
Progress 8 is described on the government website as a way of measuring the progress that pupils make from the end of key stage two (year six or the last year of primary school) to the end of key stage four (years 10 and 11 when they take GCSEs).
The higher a pupil's 'Progress 8' score, the more progress they have made in comparison with pupils who started at a similar level.
The score is calculated by taking a pupil's best-performing subjects at GCSEs alongside maths, English and the sciences and working out their attainment on average compared to their peers in primary school. The average is set at zero, with scores above zero indicating a higher than average progress made. When a score is below zero it shows that less progress has been made than expected.
The report has been pulled together from government data from last year's GCSE results, with Progress 8 scores an indicator of the amount of help each secondary school gave pupils to improve their overall grades.
In Leicestershire, Manor High School had the highest Progress 8 score in Leicestershire with 1.08 above the average of zero. The school won approval last December to build a new sports hall needed to help it meet growing pupil numbers.
Second on the list was The Market Bosworth School with a score of 0.75, recently listed by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) as one of the eight secondary schools rated 'outstanding' in Leicester and Leicestershire according to Ofsted.
De Lisle College in Loughborough was close behind with a score of 0.74, whilst fourth and fifth on the list were Gartree High School in Oadby and Saint Martin's Catholic Voluntary Academy in Stoke Golding both with a score of 0.54.
In terms of the schools with the lowest Progress 8 score, Stephenson Studio in Coalville had the lowest, with a score of -2.16. The school was reported as having the highest rate of absence in Leicestershire in October last year. In second place was The Winstanley School in Braunstone, with a score of -0.91. The school had the second highest truancy rate listed in the same report.
The Castle Rock School in Coalville was third on the list with a score of -0.78, whilst South Wigston High School with a score of -0.68 and Wreake Valley Academy in Syston were fourth and fifth with scores of -0.68 and -0.61.
