A Coalville school is among three in Leicestershire taking part in a scheme that will see the roads around them closed to traffic at drop-off and pick-up times.

A four-week trial of the 'school streets' programme will take place at Belvoirdale Community Primary School in Coalville after the summer holidays.

The scheme, led by Leicestershire County Council, seeks to limits the traffic outside schools at busy periods.

It will create a safe space for children to walk, cycle, scoot or 'park and walk' to school, while also tackling traffic congestion and air quality, the council has said.

It is due to take place place from Tuesday, August 30 to the end of September.

Scotlands Road, leading to Belvoirdale Primary School, will also be closed between 8am and 9:15am and 2:15pm and 3:45pm.

Councillor Ozzy O'Shea, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "I'm pleased that we're trialling this scheme as a way to tackle congestion and the whole host of issues we experience outside the school gates.

"School streets can be one way in which we lessen these issues and make the school run easier, healthier and safer for everyone.

"I'm glad this trial will investigate this potential solution further and look forward to seeing its results."

"This includes the journey, to and from school. Belvoirdale is proud to be part of the school streets campaign."

The county council has said residents who live in the affected streets will still have access.

They will need to apply for a free permit from the Choose How You Move website later in the summer.

It is also calling for volunteers to help implement the scheme.

They will be asked to cordon off the roads and monitor access.

Training and equipment will be provided. The volunteers will also have a liaison officer, who is a council employee who works with them, giving support and relaying any public concerns.

The council will also be holding walk in public engagement sessions closer to the launch of the scheme.

More information will be made available over the summer.
