Coalville Pubs Operate Postcode Checks To Keep Out Leicester Lockdown Drinkers

Pubs in the Coalville area re-opened as 'Super Saturday' got under way - but it was a very different experience for pubgoers.

And some pubs said it was important to keep out anyone from outside the community and protect our younger members - a clear reference to the new Covid-19 lockdown in Leicester.

The Gate in Hugglescote was operating a photo ID system to try and keep that from happening.

And the Bull's Head at Abbots Oak also said they were operating a postcode check in case people from Leicester tried to gain entry over the next fortnight.

A message on the Bull's Head Facebook page reads: "As a further safety measure when we reopen this Saturday, and for extra peace of mind, we will at least for the next two weeks, require all visitors to the Bull's Head, Abbots Oak, to provide us with ID that clearly shows their postcode.

"We will be operating a postcode checker at entrance and not be accepting any visitors to the Bull's Head who reside within the lockdown / red alert postcodes in Leicester."

The Gate posted on Saturday afternoon that they were showing the Leicester City v Crystal Palace game.

But they made it clear that they did not want anyone from the Leicester area coming to the pub.

A message on The Gate Facebook page reads: "Hi to all loyal Gate Inn customers.

"Whilst we are excited to see old friends on Saturday, we are mindful that there is still a great deal of danger out there, especially with an outbreak as close as Glenfield.

"Accordingly, we are taking measures to protect our customers.

"These will include people bringing photographic ID and unfortunately we will not be able to accept any children on the premises.

"I realise this is not ideal but we must keep out anyone from outside our community and protect our younger members.

"Measures will be in place inside the pub to try to protect our customers but everyone must accept and realise that their own behaviour will be the arbiter of how successful this is.

"Should anyone feel uncomfortable inside, then please mention it to us immediately to see what can be done.

"We only envisage having limited numbers inside and expect to use the upstairs facility with table service only."

As well as that, strict guidelines are in place to make sure customers are socially distanced and staff kept safe in pubs across the area.

The Snibstone New Inn in Belvoir Road published a long list of rules for its visitors ahead of the re-opening.

And it was obvious that going to the pub will not be the same for a while yet.

Manager Gemma King told returning drinkers: "As you all know by now pubs have been given the go ahead to re-open from July 4th.

"I am very much looking forward to welcoming you all back to The Snibby on Saturday 4th of July, but as you know due to the Covid19 pandemic there will be a few changes made in line with the Government's Social Distancing Rules.

"This is to keep the staff and the customers as safe as possible during this difficult time. This is a challenging time for everyone so please be patient, obide by all rules and use common sense, that way it will be a pleasant time for everyone.

  • New signs have been placed through out the pub, giving social distancing instructions, please take a few minutes to read.
  • A one way system has been put in place with entrance through the front door and exit through the top or beer garden door.
  • Hand sanitiser has been placed in the main entrance, EVERYONE must use this upon entry please. (If it is empty, please report to a member of staff)
  • Extra steps to ensure everyone's safety. Tables will be cleaned after each use.
  • The bar will have an order point and collection point for all drinks, signs will be placed. (My advice if saying for a couple is to order all at once, two pint containers are available to top up your pint as you drink. )
  • Cash or card will be accepted.
  • There will be no sitting or standing at the bar, please collect your drinks and take a seat at one of the tables.
  • There will be a drop off point for you to place all empty glasses.
  • There will be no vaping allowed inside the pub and no smoking allowed outside the entrance or exit, please leave at least 2m to allow customers to enter and exit safely.
  • Only one customer at a time to use the Bandit.
  • Only two customers at a time to use the toilets. Please ensure your hands are washed, guidelines for thorough handwashing have been placed inside the toilets.
  • Tables have been spaced out for your safety and outdoor seating is provided, if the pub does get to current capacity you will unfortunately be asked to queue outside or come back later.
  • Entertainment will be postponed for the time being as per Government guidelines, please keep watching the page for further updates.

"Please be patient with all bar staff at this strange time, this is very new to everyone but rest assured we are doing everything possible to ensure you have a good time with us and remain safe."
