Coalville's clock tower will be lit up green tonight (Wednesday).

That will be to celebrate Coalville Park retaining its Green Flag award for the second year.

Green Flag status is reserved for parks and green spaces that set a high standard and are appropriately managed to meet the needs of the communities they serve.

North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) manage Coalville Park and work alongside the Friends of Coalville Park community group, working to develop future plans and ideas for the space.

As well as its play equipment, skate park, outdoor gym, 400 metre running track and tennis courts, the park has two dedicated gardens.

To retain their Green Flag status, NWLDC had to prove that the park:

•Is a welcoming space

•Is healthy, safe and secure

•Is well-maintained and clean

•Is environmentally friendly

•Pays attention to biodiversity, landscape and heritage

•Has community involvement

•Has a suitable a management plan.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "Thanks to the brilliant work of our parks team and the Friends of Coalville Park community group, we have managed to retain our Green Flag status.

"This is a fantastic achievement, and in honour of this we will be lighting up the clock tower in Coalville Green on the 14 October.

"We're so pleased that the park has been recognised and we hope that this encourages more people to come and safely enjoy the park than ever before."

Amy Shepherd, Secretary of the Friends of Coalville Park added: "It is excellent news that Coalville Park has managed to retain its Green Flag award for the second year and we want to thank everyone that has contributed and helped us to achieve this. We're looking forward to continuing our work and improving the park with better facilities so that more people can come and enjoy our lovely park."
