Coalville MP Andrew Bridgen has written to Labour Party leader Sir Keir Stamer to complain about a Facebook post allegedly written by Thringstone councillor David Everett.

Mr Bridgen repeats a claim that originally appeared on the Order-order.com website last Friday.

In the article, it is said that North West Leicestershire District Councillor Mr Everett made disparaging remarks about Brexit voters in connection with the current Covid pandemic.

Mr Bridgen posted on twitter today (Tuesday) and said: "I was saddened to learn that a Labour councillor in North West Leicestershire has written that it was a pity Covid-19 had not 'culled' Brexit voters before the pandemic. I have written to Keir Stamer to ask if this disgraceful opinion is welcome in today's Labour Party."

In his letter, the Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire writes: "In Councillor Everett's world, would it have been preferable for all of the 17.4 million who voted for Brexit to be 'culled', or just enough to allow Remain to have won?

"Millions of decent people, including the significant majority in my own constituency and former Labour-held seats, voted for Brexit because they believed it would bring them a better life.

"I find it truly despicable that one of your councillors would invoke the global tragedy of Covid-19 as a means to prevent a democratic decision that he happens to disagree with."

Cllr Everett has now apologised for the comments.
