A Coalville man was due in court on Monday after being charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

This relates to an incident last Friday (Nov 8) in which armed police were called to the Bardon Road area.

A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article.

As result, Darren Withers, 56, of Bradgate Drive, Coalville, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and failing to provide a specimen.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said he is due to appear before Leicester Magistrates' Court today (Monday, November 11).

The initial response last Friday was that there were concerns about the welfare of the man.

A spokesperson for the force said on Saturday: "A 56-year-old man was arrested in the Bardon Road area of Coalville, around 5.20pm yesterday (Friday 8 November) after officers were called to the area following concerns about the welfare of the man.

"It was reported that the man may be in possession of a bladed weapon.

"In the interests of officer and public safety the armed response team were deployed to the scene.

"The man was subsequently located and arrested.

"One officer was treated for a minor cut to his hand – no other reported injuries."
