Leicestershire Police has issued some safety advice to the public ahead of the holiday fortnight in the region.

The Police are concerned that the next couple of weeks could be seen as rich pickings for criminals.

And they have posted some warnings on social media today (Friday).

They say: "Enjoy the summer holidays – keep yourself safe

"As we go into the Leicester fortnight, with many schools having already finished for the summer holidays, we want to say this: enjoy yourselves – but please do so responsibly.

"The open spaces across the counties are inviting, offering the perfect escape in the summer sun.

"Make sure, if you're out in one of the parks in the holidays, you are being fair to others around you and not taking part in any antisocial behaviour that might attract the attention of local police officers or PCSOs.

"To anyone who is lucky enough to be going on holiday, please make sure your properties are secure. Leave all doors and windows closed and locked, and consider using a timer to turn your lights on and off; don't make your home look like an easy target for criminals while you're away.

"And if you're staying in Leicestershire this summer, and enjoying time in your gardens, don't leave windows open in a part of the house you're not using.

"Many criminals are opportunistic – they will see and open window and take their chances.

"Don't leave your home vulnerable – keep windows and doors closed."

Chief Superintendent Jonny Starbuck for the Local Policing Directorate said: "In warmer weather, we often see increases in houses being broken into through insecure windows and doors. A burglar can be in and out in a matter of seconds, and we want to ensure that everyone is keeping themselves safe as much as possible.

"With some lovely weather forecast over the next couple of weeks especially, people will be out in their back gardens, maybe having barbecues as it's getting dark – not thinking about that open window on the other side of the house making their home vulnerable.

"I'm not saying don't open your windows at all – but please, just think about which ones are open and if they offer a burglar an unwelcome opportunity."
