Youngsters involved in the Coalville Kickstart programme have told how it has changed their lives and set themselves up for a career.

The Kickstart Scheme makes up part of the Government's Plan For Jobs skills and employment programmes, which also include Apprenticeships, T Levels and Traineeships.

It offers six-month jobs for young people aged 16 to 24 years old who are currently claiming Universal Credit and are at risk of long-term unemployment.

Last month, a group of 18 youngsters completed their six month spell working with local employers under the guidance Coalville community organisation THINK FC.

Deana Wildgoose, of THINK, explained how the group had been given a chance with local employers and gained confidence for the future.

"This is the end of Kickstart One, this group came together in February, during lockdown, last month marked their six month 'time up', and now we can see what they are planning to do," said Deana.

Some of the Kickstarters told Coalville Nub News what the scheme had done for them.

Harry, 21, said: "I'd never really had a proper job before so I was low on confidence.

"I wasn't sure what I could do in the workplace, so I didn't have much ambition.

"I thought it'd be horrible but it's given me a different perspective, it also made me realise the skills I have.

"I've been concentrating on the Coalville Mega-Walk, (see video above) which is six mile route around the town and highlights what's in the area and makes people realise what is on the doorstep.

"I also worked with CASE and their history of the Co-op exhibition.

"The Kickstart Scheme made me realise what I can really do, you learn a lot and it's really helpful. It's made me a lot more enthusiastic."

Ben added: "I got made redundant last year because of Covid. It was really hard to find another job, people were asking for five years' experience and I only had three and a half.

"This was a way to get back to work. I work on admin side here and I'm hoping to be involved in the next round of Kickstart, trying to make sure it runs as smoothly as possible."

Ellie added: "I was working at No22 in Coalville and I'm staying on there as well.

"It's been really good for me, I make cobs and sandwiches, you can have a coffee and talk to people. It's a place where people can be themselves"

Toby added: "I was on the kickstart for video and editing . Since college, which ended abruptly because of Covid, this is my job with cameras, photography and film.

"It's my ambition one day to direct a film."
