A brand new model railway exhibition is coming to Coalville this weekend, (18-19 September).

Based at the Marlene Reid Centre on Belvoir Road, the Model Railway Show will bring together model railway societies from across the Midlands — including groups from Coalville, Grantham, Leicester, Lutterworth, and Melton Mowbray — in a celebration of the hobby, showcasing some of the region's best layouts.

Among the exhibitors will be 'Muddle and Go Nowhere', a close-knit group of friends who reached the semi-finals of the 'Great Model Railway Challenge', broadcast on Channel 5 in 2019.

The Model Railway Show promises a 'one stop shop' for all modellers, with a range of trade stands offering everything from model locomotives and rolling stock to scenic accessories and enamel signs.

Friendly expert advice will be available, including free minor repairs and diagnostics.

Younger enthusiasts may take part in the 'Great Model Railway Robbery' treasure trail, hosted by 'Escape Coalville' with prizes on offer. Sir Topham Hatt, aka "The Fat Controller", will also be in attendance. Refreshments will be available from the MRC cafe.

The family-friendly event is sponsored by Rocket Railways, whose new shop opened in July, and is based at the Marlene Reid Centre.

Established with the aim of providing model railways at affordable prices, Rocket Railways started out in Grantham in October 2019.

Named 'Employer of the Year' in the 2020 Grantham Business Awards, it is now a leader in second hand models and accessories.

Rocket Railways moved to Coalville in the winter of 2020/21, attracted by the town's rich industrial heritage and opportunities for expansion.

The company abides by an ethos of accessibility and fun, appealing to newcomers and veteran enthusiasts alike.

Managing Director, Jason Thickpenny said: "From the outset, it has always been our ambition to stage our very own model railway show, and Coalville offers the perfect venue! Located next to the Snibston colliery — a place brimming with railway and industrial history — we hope the event will attract people from miles around."

There will be two timed sessions each day from 10am until 1pm and 1.15pm until 4pm.

Tickets cost £10 for adults, £5 for children, and £25 for a family of four.
