Coalville fire crew among five engines called out to barn fire in nearby village

Five fire crews were called out to a barn blaze in Thornton on Tuesday morning.

Fire engines from Coalville, Shepshed, Birstall, Castle Donington as well as a water Carrier from Loughborough attended the incident.

The fire is believed to have started just before 8.50am.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire & Rescue said: "On arrival at the Incident, Commander requested two further fire engines to assist.

"A single storey barn 40m x 16m containing approximately 100 tonnes of straw and fire machinery.

"Crews using two main jets to attack the fire and using open water supply.

"Farm machinery was moved out of the barn."

Later, the fire service added: "The incident has been scaled down to one appliance.

"The remaining baled straw within the barn is being left to burn."
