Police and ambulance services were called to the Belvoir Road venue which was celebrating the 25th anniversary of its 'The Passion' night.

And a Leicestershire Police statement issued to Coalville Nub News on Sunday morning read: "Officers are carrying out enquiries following the sudden death of a man at a nightclub in Coalville.

"Police were informed at around 1.20am this morning (15 March) that a man had taken ill while inside the nightclub in Belvoir Road.

"Colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service were also in attendance but the man died at the scene.

"Enquiries are continuing surrounding the man's death which is currently being treated as unexplained.

"A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class A drug and remains in police custody."

A statement was also issued on behalf of the 'Passion' team following the incident, telling of the 'difficult circumstances'.

Organisers cancelled the event and posted the following on their Facebook page.

"Dear DFOP's.

"In light of recent events this evening at The Emporium, The Passion team will be making a full statement when we have been informed of all the facts.

"In the meantime we would like to thank all of the ground team who worked incredibly hard in such difficult circumstances.

"I would like also give credit to the DJs and professionals for ensuring a safe exit from what was an extremely busy nightclub.

"We would also like to ask that people on social media respect privacy at this moment in time and do not spread rumours or innuendo without being in possession of all the facts.

"We will be back to give you the full information as soon as we have it.

"Much love and kisses.

"JFK & The Passion team."

The club's Wikipedia entry says: "The Emporium is a club located in Coalville and established under that name in 1995.

"Passion was launched in 1995 by the then club owners Mark Walsh and Eric Schofield, when the club was known as Crystals.

"Chris Hall, a London promoter who had helped set up Club UK, suggested changing the name to the Emporium and starting a dance night called 'Passion'.

"He booked Todd Terry to headline the first ever event. JFK played the first ever record at Passion: the night ran from 9pm-2am, initially in one room, with a sound system being hired as the club's own system could not take the music.

"Around 700 people turned up on the first night and Passion was born.

"In 2004, JFK, who had been resident DJ and former co-owner of the club, gave up his residency to further his DJ career elsewhere, although he continued to DJ there.

"In 2006 he returned after almost two years away from the club, becoming involved with the promotion and running of the club once again.[1]

"In January 2012 Passion ran a classics night playing trance music, which was almost a sell out. The DJ line up was made up of names from past and present that have played a part in its history: A mixture of old and new residents along with cutting edge new talent.

"Room Two saw the return of Red Room Sessions and its famous residents Nick Correlli (MYNC Project) and DJ Canete."
