Three Coalville and Whitwick-based County Councillors are celebrating the announcement of important plans to reduce congestion on one of the area's busiest roads.

Local authorities have revealed a £42 million investment in improving road capacity in and around Coalville - which will see the construction of a link road to connect new homes to the south-east of the town and measures to improve congestion at pinch point junctions along the A511.

The town's three Conservative County Councillors have warmly welcomed the announcement, which is expected to be confirmed by Leicestershire County Council this week.

Councillor Keith Merrie, Conservative County Councillor for Coalville South, said "The new homes that are being built in Coalville will help grow our local economy for generations to come.

"But they do mean, as a town, we have to adapt.

"A new link road will reduce congestion at the Birch Tree Road roundabout and make the journey along Bardon Road smoother."

Councillor Tony Gillard, Conservative County Councillor for Whitwick added: "Our new Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre is looking amazing.

"Improvements to Stephenson Way and the Whitwick Road roundabout will be the icing on the cake in allowing users to access the site without inconveniencing motorists."

Councillor Craig Smith, Conservative County Councillor for Coalville North commented: "All of us hate sitting waiting in traffic jams but all of us rely on our road network too - a £42million investment will enable us to future proof the likes of the Hoo Ash and Thornborough Road roundabouts for generations to come."
