Coalville councillor says North West Leicestershire should appoint its own town crier
A senior Coalville councillor wants to explore the possibility of North West Leicestershire having its own town crier.
Friday's official opening of Marlborough Square featured Hinckley's town crier making announcements during the event in Coalville town centre.
Now, Cllr Michael Wyatt has asked senior officers to look at the idea of North West Leicestershire having its own version.
Cllr Wyatt, deputy leader of the council, said: "At the opening of Marlborough Square we managed to get the Hinckley town crier to attend and to compere the opening event, which I know many enjoyed as it gave the event more purpose and even, dare I say, made it more entertaining."
He says the addition of such a figure would help to raise the profile of the district - and recognise the culture of the region.
Cllr Wyatt added: "Having a town crier, in my opinion would help to showcase North West Leicestershire, which offers so much.
"And it would allow us to celebrate and participate in all things that make us English.
"Having a district-wide town crier who is passionate about where we live would help to improve our sense of identity and our culture which needs to be preserved and celebrated."
