Coalville-based Liberal Democrat county councillor Michael Wyatt says he will not be voting for an 'outrageous' five per cent council tax increase.

Leicestershire County Council last week announced the increase which it said left them with 'no alternative' following the effects of the coronavirus pandemic during 2020.

Council leader Nick Rushton defends tax rise

But Cllr Wyatt says this is 'more financial pain from the Tories'.

He added: "This time it's the Tory controlled county council who have said they are going to be recommending a five per cent increase in their council meeting tax precept.

"I will not be voting for this outrageous increase.

"People are struggling and do not need another financial hit.

"I hear and see people everyday on the brink.

"I cannot and will not vote to take more money from the pockets of local residents.

"The Tories who run the county council have proven time and time again they don't care about those who are struggling.

"We need real change that puts people first.

"Hopefully, in May, residents will give Cllr Rushton and others their P45s, which is long overdue."
