A cornfield in Coalville was almost entirely destroyed in a deliberate fire yesterday (Tues) afternoon.

Two fire crews from the town were among seven Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service vehicles mobilised to tackle the standing corn fire in Chiswell Drive, when the alarm was raised just before 3.45pm.

Teams from Castle Donnington, Ashby and Swadlincote, along with the Shepshed command support vehicle and Loughborough water carrier attended.

Firefighters used two hose reel jets and beaters to put out the blaze which covered around 200m sq.

A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue spokesman told Coalville Nub News today (Weds): "The last crews left at 8.24pm.

"Damage is 90 percent to standing crop by fire.

"The cause was deliberate ignition."
