A Coalville community figure is raising awareness of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Kirat Sandhu, the local Sikh Community representative and Communications Officer with the North West Leicestershire Conservative Association, says September serves as an important reminder of the challenges faced by children diagnosed with cancer and the urgent need to support those affected.

He said: "Childhood cancer, although it's rare, it is unfortunately a harsh reality for too many families. In the UK, approximately 1,800 children are diagnosed with cancer each year.

"While survival rates have improved significantly over the past few decades, with over 80 per cent of children now surviving for five years or more, cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children.

"The impact of a cancer diagnosis on young lives, affecting not just the physical health of children but also their emotional well-being and their families.

"During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, let's come together as a community to raise awareness and support these young warriors. The gold ribbon, the symbol of this month, represents the strength, courage, and resilience of children battling cancer."

Donate: Financial contributions are vital in the fight against childhood cancer. Charities like Children with Cancer UK, CLIC Sargent, and the Childhood Cancer Research Fund rely on donations to fund research, provide family support, and improve treatment options. Even a small donation can make a big difference.

Participate in Fundraising Events: Many organisations host events throughout September, from charity runs and walks to bake sales and community gatherings. Participating in or organising a local event is a great way to raise money and spread awareness.

Spread the Word: Use your voice on social media or within your community to share facts about childhood cancer, the importance of early detection, and ways people can support the cause. Educating others is a powerful tool in the fight against cancer.

Volunteer: Giving your time to charities that support children with cancer can be incredibly impactful. Whether it's helping at events, offering skills in marketing or administration, or providing emotional support to affected families, your contribution can be invaluable.

Purchase Gold Ribbon Merchandise: Many charities offer gold ribbon-themed products, from pins to T-shirts. Purchasing and wearing these items is a simple way to show your support and spark conversations about the cause.

Kirat added: "Let's stand united in support and turn our awareness into action and make Childhood Cancer Awareness Month a time of hope, support, and progress for all."
