A Coalville community group says its plans for an 'events venue' at the former Market Hall are still on the table.

Plans by North West Leicestershire District Council to sell the site have been dropped after a year - leaving the future of the site in limbo.

The council had aimed to turn the site in Coalville into a leisure venue 'like a cinema' - and had set a deadline of last April for offers to be made.

A 'preferred bidder' should have been named around month later, with the council looking to attract fresh investment for the building which is currently owns.

The council said last year: "Feasibility studies show that the location of the former market hall, which stands on the edge of the town centre next to the main car park, means that it is prime for re-use as commercial leisure activity, like a cinema."

At the time, Coalville CAN also revealed plans to use the building as an independent cinema.

Coalville Nub News understands that proposal is still in place, 12 months after details were revealed - although an 'events venue', rather than specific cinema use, is also a suggestion.

The group collaborated with independent cinema founder Sam Lavington who has already opened a similar cinema in Skelmersdale.

Coalville CAN  then put together a proposal to redevelop the site with a two-screen cinema - 65 seats in each - along with a multi-use space in the same building that could be used for exhibitions or a Christmas ice rink.

That was delivered to North West Leicestershire District Council.

A spokesperson for Coalville CAN told Coalville Nub News: "Our position hasn't changed - we think an events venue with or without a cinema would be brilliant for Coalville.

"We have had no formal feedback from our bid to the council as yet."

Deana Bamford, of Coalville CAN, said last year: "There's only one design like this in the country, it has so much potential.

"The building could be used for a wide range of activities including a cinema.

"Love it or hate it, the Market Hall could be turned into a venue to help put Coalville on the map as a great place to live, to work and to visit."

North West Leicestershire District Council has already put plans for a leisure facility in the town centre in place.

A new bowling alley and apartment block will see the part-demolition and changes to the Emporium nightclub on Belvoir Road.
