Coalville CAN is hosting an exhibition of Co-operative Memorabilia at its Memorial Square to mark 2025 as the International Year of Co-operatives.

The exhibition celebrates the rich history of co-operation in Coalville and throughout the country following the first successful Co-operative store opening in Rochdale store in 1844.

There are fascinating local items on display and many of the surnames of those involved in the early days of the Coalville Co-op are still to be found in the area.

Coalville CAN is encouraging people to come along to find their relatives and ancestors - and share some reminiscences!

The exhibition is not just a celebration of the past – it is also about the relevance of Co-ops as a solution to challenges today and for tomorrow.

CASE, the local organisation which promotes and supports Co-operatives and Social Enterprises has organised the exhibition and it is fitting that it is being held at Coalville CAN – a Co-operative enterprise.

Events will be held throughout the exhibition, including Community Singing on Saturday, January 18, which is open to the public, workshops and school visits.

On Wednesday evening, January 22, members of the public will be invited to share stories and memories of Old Coalville.

Jane Avery from CASE said that she hoped the exhibition could be in other towns and villages as previous similar exhibits in Leicester and Markfeld had provoked much local interest.

She said: "Co-ops have a fascinating history, are alive and kicking today, meeting the needs and aspirations of their members, and have a great future as a solution to the many challenges we face in the future.

"I have worked with groups looking for solutions to housing needs, providing alternatives to loan sharks through Credit Unions (Co-operative savings and lending clubs), employee buyouts and Community owned energy projects."

The exhibition is on until January 27.
