A car crashed into The Crown Inn Pub in Heather today (Wednesday) and hit a gas main - forcing police to close the road.

The incident happened this afternoon in Main Street, on the junction of Mill Lane where The Crown Inn is situated, shortly after 2pm and three fire crews, including two from Coalville, were called to the village.

But the collision also caused the danger of a gas leak at the pub.

Police, ambulance and a doctor were also on the scene, but no casualties were reported.

The Crown Inn's co-owner Roy Blount told Coalville Nub News: "It looks like a learner driver cut the corner and lost control.

"The car hit the gas main and we had to close the pub - but we'll be open again this afternoon.

"The fire brigade are still here and the gas company are making sure everything's safe.

"We were shaken up but thankfully, no-one was injured and everyone's safe."

The pub later posted a message online which said: "Due to unforeseen circumstances pie night will be tomorrow night. We are open as usual."

The gas main was isolated prior to the arrival of Fire Service.

Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service said: "The Incident has now been left with police who are awaiting the arrival of Cadent Gas.

"Initial call came from police advising of a vehicle that had collided with a building and had also hit a gas main."

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police added: "Around 2.10pm today (Wednesday 23 June) officers received a report from a member of the public about a car that crashed into gas mains on Main Street, Heather.

"The road has been closed while officers and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue attend the scene and gas engineers ensure the area is safe.

"No injuries have been reported."

The police had earlier posted: ROAD CLOSURE 14:34hrs. Please be aware Main Street Heather to Mill Lane Heather are both closed due to a police incident.

"Please find an alternative route."
