Plans are in the pipeline to turn a former Coalville social club and boxing centre into flats and retail units.

Mr B Singh has submitted a planning application to turn the disused Bardon Community Venue, in Bardon Road, into six flats, a hot food takeaway and two shops.

A document supporting the scheme says: "The existing premises closed a number of years ago and remain vacant as there is no requirement locally for their use.

"The proposals are not only to create additional much sought-after residential accommodation in the area but will also provide three small retail units suitable for takeaway and small local businesses.

"This will help to provide local services to local people on Bardon Road and the surrounding area.

"The proposals will have a positive impact on the local economy both during the construction/renovation works through the employment of local trades and use of local materials.

"Once complete the commercial units will help to push towards a thriving town and provide additional facilities for those in the local area, thus helping the local economy."
