A town centre opticians employee has made it through to the next round of Coalville Has Talent - a competition which aims to showcase rising stars in the local community.

Andrew Taylor, 36, who works at Specsavers in the Belvoir Shopping Centre, took to the Century Theatre stage earlier this month to perform Michael Jackson's You Are Not Alone.

Performances were judged by the audience, with six making it through to the quarter-finals next month - with the final on August 6.

Andrew, who lives in Swadlincote, said: "I can't believe it.

"Although I've sung since I was eight-years-old and have even worked abroad as a singer in the past – I wasn't really sure I was good enough for this sort of competition.

"But the feedback from everyone was amazing and it's given me such a confidence boost.

"I'm now looking forward to the next round and will be busy practicing in the run-up. Customers be warned!"

Shailan Ruparelia, Specsavers Coalville store director, added: "We're incredibly proud of Andrew.

"To stand up there on stage and perform like that was incredible, especially considering he's self-taught and busy most days helping people with their specs.

"We're all rooting for him for the next round and wish him the very best.'
