A cinema for Coalville is a 'big No1 priority' for the town says district council leader

By Graham Hill 4th Mar 2022

North West Leicestershire District Council leader Richard Blunt has admitted 'confidential' talks have begun over bringing a new cinema to Coalville.

Cllr Blunt was quizzed at last week's meeting of the Cabinet - and said a potential venue was in the pipeline.

The town is undergoing a council regeneration programme and the possibility of a new cinema has been under discussion for some time.

Coalville has not had a cinema since the demise of the old Rex 1 and 2 in town.

But Cllr Blunt said: "We are in discussions on the possibility of a cinema, but it's highly confidential and highly commercial.

"I'm unable to share.

"It's a big investment, as you can imagine, and certain things are confidential - the numbers are challenging.

"More allowances will come but only when I have approval from the private sector partners I'm working with.

"You can understand that if I spoke too soon and they went away, I'd been doing a disservice to Coalville.

"It's the one part of the jigsaw I'd like to put away, it's a big No1 priority for me.

"And that's not for the election by the way - something I can put on my leaflet.

"I don't do it to win future votes."
