The Friends of Thringstone has won the Community Organisation prize at the Leicestershire Community Champions Awards.

At the event, held at Leicestershire County Cricket Club, the village group also made it into the final three of the Environmental category.

The award comes hot on the heels of winning the Leicestershire Live Environmental Award 2021.

Nita Pearson, of the Friends of Thringstone, said: "I had to put together a submission and then two videos as to why we thought we should be considered.

"The submission had to show that a group was innovative and inclusive.

"I said we were unique, had been going since 2005, and listed everything we had done since we started, including helping a chap when he had a fire in his flat on Shrewsbury Walk - and we organised collections, refurnished his new flat and gave him clothing and stuff, right down to a toothbrush.

"I also mentioned how we helped with flooding - helping with cleaning out the Methodist church and distributing cleaning materials to homes affected in Whitwick.

"And I then talked about litter, planting, all our history publications, events, and the work we did during the lockdown with Thringstone Creates to produce artwork reflective of lockdown.

"I am so pleased that our group has yet again been recognised for its work in our community.

"I would like to thank everybody who helps in any way at all - litter picking, planting, events, deliveries of leaflets and baubles, storing or putting together new craft projects."
