North West Leicestershire District Council says its food waste collections weigh the same as 25 elephants.

The trials have been taking place in Coalville - as well as in Measham and the surrounding villages.

Now the council has released its latest figures as part of keeping the unwanted food away from landfill sites and recycling it.

The council posted: "We've collected over 100 tonnes of food waste since our trials in Measham (and surrounding villages) and Coalville began!

"That's roughly the same weight as 25 male Asian elephants!

The collected food waste has been diverted away from landfill and recycled into green energy and a bio-fertiliser for farming."

The council is also encouraging residents to try home composting and added: "If you're not on our trial but would like to recycle your food waste, why not try home-composting? Find out more at: Home composting.
