Operational Performance Director - Aggregates Division

Location: Nationwide, Aggregate Division

Reporting to: Managing Director, Aggregates Division

Overview

Each year, the Aggregates Division transports around 30 million tonnes of primary aggregates across the UK via road, rail, and sea, contributing to major projects like Crossrail, HS2, and Thameslink. The division aims for exponential growth by expanding its portfolio to include recycled aggregates, operating at the premium end of the market, and offering industry-leading, carbon-reduced products.

This role is crucial for driving operational excellence, enhancing production efficiency, and leading sustainability efforts, including decarbonization and integration into the circular economy.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement an Operational Excellence strategy to improve production efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability.

  • Collaborate with senior leaders to standardise best practices and drive continuous improvements using lean manufacturing techniques.

  • Oversee capital expenditure projects and ensure alignment with regional and global company standards.

  • Lead change management initiatives to foster a culture of continuous improvement, focusing on plant performance, maintenance, and procurement.

  • Support quarry managers and regional teams in operational enhancements and sustainability goals.

  • Champion sustainability efforts, including the decarbonization of the portfolio and circular economy integration.

Skills and Experience:

  • Senior leadership experience in asset-heavy industries with a proven ability to drive operational efficiency and innovation.

  • Strong strategic thinker with the ability to create and implement continuous improvement methodologies.

  • Demonstrated experience in influencing senior stakeholders and working across matrix organisations.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build credibility at all levels of the organisation.

  • Expertise in lean manufacturing techniques, production flexibility, and cost efficiency.

  • Demonstrated success in coaching and developing teams to drive operational performance.

  • Strong planning and organisational abilities with attention to detail and results-driven mindset.

  • High level of self-awareness, able to evaluate personal performance and adapt behaviours to enhance outcomes.

  • Commitment to sustainability and decarbonization, with experience in implementing innovative solutions to reduce environmental impact.

  • Experience in technical procurement and managing capital expenditure for major projects.

  • Strong people management skills, with a focus on fostering engagement, coaching, and identifying successors for key roles.
