The Famous 50 Farewell

Memorial Square Coalville

UNTIL Saturday 23rd October

The Famous 50 exhibition will be making its farewell in a special ceremony this weekend.

At the moment, the individually made model soldiers are on show at venues in Coalville.

But, from October 18, there will be an exhibition at the Hermitage FM coffee lounge.

This will be followed by a special goodbye parade on Saturday, October 23, which will be happening at 10am at the Clock Tower in Memorial Square - followed by a disbanding at 11am when the models will be returned to their owners.

The time when people can see them all together is 10-11am on the 23rd.

Also, the Seaforth Highlanders will be there as part of the parade on the 23rd - and all the men that marched as part of the 'March of the Fifty' organised by Llynda Baugh are also invited.

Part of the Famous 50 exhibition which will be disbanded this month

The Famous 50 were the first civilian soldiers to step foot in France in World War 1, and they all came from the Coalville area - 22 survived.

Four years ago, an exhibition was created by 50 local groups and organisations.

It started in Coalville Market, went to the Co-op and then toured various places including Ashby, Cardiff, Moira and Yorkshire.

These same soldiers will all on be display during October before a final service with the Whitwick Branch Of The Royal British Legion on the 23rd.

All the soldiers are going back to their makers after the service with any remaining given to The Snibstone New Inn in Coalville for permanent display,
